The Message: Martin Luther King Jr.

Comments

I was born in Memphis in 1968, less than a month before Dr. King was assassinated. My mother was active in the Civil rights movement. Only her advanced pregnancy kept her at home on April 4th. My mother told me she thought she'd go into labor when she heard the news. My folks lived in the downtown area, relatively close to the Lorraine Motel. Rioting occurred literally in the neighborhood. My mother said she, her three sisters, mother, and brother hid in the bathroom (quite a feat considering how small it was) while the sirens, gunshots, and screaming raged outside.
I was born in February of 68. My family was not near Memphis, but the rioting was in Nashville as well. My grandmother was traveling back from Clarksville with some of her symphony friends when they literally ran into the riots in Nashville. They were okay, but a bit shaken.

I honestly do not know how they felt about Dr. King or the assassination itself.
